Demi received the Artistic Award of Courage at the Open Mind Gala, a biannual charity event hosted by UCLA’s Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior.  Demi was presented with the honor by the CEO of CAST, a wellness and recovery center that personally helped her so much, she became an owner.

Demi has had her own struggles with bipolar disorder and substance abuse.  Accepting the award, she said, “When I started to raise awareness around mental health, my goal was to simplify the conversation and to break down the barriers that are placed around it.”

While Demi noted that “showing kindness and acceptance to ourselves and to others” is important in raising awareness of this issue, she quickly learned that that a lack of resources keeps those with mental health conditions from getting the care they need.

“I feel like the work I’d like to do in creating change in our society has just begun,” she said.

The event, hosted by Lisa Kudrow, featured a performance by former Glee star Chord Overstreet, who’s now signed to Demi’s Safe House record label.
